Key takeaways

  • Liposuction removes fat. A BBL removes fat and moves some of it to the buttocks.
  • Neither procedure is a weight-loss treatment or a fix for loose skin.
  • In a BBL, fat belongs only above the gluteal muscle, never in it.
  • Start by deciding whether your goal is reduction, reshaping or both.

What does liposuction change?

Liposuction removes localized subcutaneous fat. It is not a weight-loss treatment, and it does not treat loose skin, stretch marks, cellulite, or visceral fat.

What makes a BBL different?

A BBL combines fat removal with fat transfer to the buttocks. Current multi-society guidance calls for placing fat only in the subcutaneous plane above the gluteal fascia, never in muscle. The procedure should not be reduced to a simple volume choice because anatomy and safety considerations require an in-person evaluation. Fat is placed only above the gluteal muscle because fat placed in or beneath the muscle has been linked to fat embolism, a rare but potentially fatal complication.

Can either procedure tighten loose skin?

Liposuction removes fat but cannot correct significant loose skin or separated abdominal muscles. When those concerns are present, a different body-contouring procedure may need to be discussed.

How do you describe the shape you want?

Words like “natural” and “dramatic” mean different things to different people, so be specific. Bring a few example photos of body shapes you like on frames similar to yours, and say what you do not want as clearly as what you do. Your surgeon can then explain which parts of that goal your body can reasonably support.

How do you compare the options responsibly?

Bring a clear description of what you want to change and ask what each option can realistically address. A consultation should cover the planned areas, surgical setting, recovery demands, limitations, and risks specific to you.

Quick questions

Is a BBL the same as liposuction?
No. Liposuction removes fat from chosen areas. A BBL also uses liposuction, then transfers processed fat to the buttocks.
Can I ask for a subtle BBL?
Yes. Tell your surgeon the shape you want in plain words and with example photos, and ask what your body can reasonably support.
Can liposuction fix loose skin?
No. Liposuction removes fat but cannot correct significant loose skin. A different body contouring procedure may need to be discussed for that.
